Annual Membership Meeting: June 5
Join us for our annual Membership Meeting, which will serve as the launch of our 2025 programming focus—Louisiana Queer Arts. After a brief business meeting, we will present the Stewart Butler / Alfred Doolittle Award for Contributions to Queer History. This year’s recipient is pioneering lesbian Barbara Scott. We will then have a panel discussion to discuss the legacy of J.B. Harter’s art. The meeting will be accompanied by exhibitions of Harter’s and Scott’s artwork. Light refreshments will be provided. Up Stairs Lounge Plaque Dedication: June 22
A new plaque commemorating the victims of the Up Stairs Lounge fire will be dedicated at the site of the fire (604 Iberville Street in the French Quarter) on Sunday, June 22 at 5:00p.m. After the ceremony, there will be a second-line to Crossing (439 Dauphine Street) for a reception. The original plaque (pictured above) was stolen last year and sold for scrap metal. Since then, the Archives Project has been working with a replacement committee to raise money, design, and install a new plaque. Learn more about the tragic 1973 arson here.
Society of Southwestern Archivists Conference
The Archives Project had a presence at the annual Society of Southwest Archivists Conference in Lafayette recently. Executive Director Frank Perez met with archivists from across the Southwest and shared the fascinating history and important work the Archives Project is doing. Attendees were interested and supportive. Several archivists from Louisiana who were not familiar with us signed up as members and twenty-five attendees subscribed to our newsletter.
It’s Time To Renew Your Membership
It’s that time again. Annual memberships expire at the end of this month. You can renew your annual membership at the Membership Meeting on June 5, or on-line now here. All you need to do to renew is make a donation of at least $20. Recurring monthly donations are especially welcome. If you are currently a recurring donor, your membership will be automatically renewed. Thank you for supporting the Archives Project!
